Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, is a protocol employed to encode the information exchanged between a server and its users. The practical application of employing an SSL is to secure the data that customers submit on your site - a login page, a payment page if you run a web-based store, etc. Any data they input in any box on the Internet site will be submitted securely to the server, so their login or payment details shall be protected from being accessed by unauthorized people. In general, an SSL certificate requires a dedicated IP address to be set up, meaning that the overall cost for your online presence will be higher. While this might not exactly be an issue for a larger firm, it might matter for a non-profit organization or a small web store which doesn't generate big income if additional money should be spent. This is the key reason why we've taken advantage of an extension known as Server Name Indication (SNI) and we have made it possible to use a shared server IP address to install an SSL certificate.

Shared SSL IP in Shared Web Hosting

A shared IP could be used for any SSL certificate, irrespective if you acquire it from us or from a different dealer and regardless of the shared web hosting service you have on our end. If you acquire the SSL through us, you shall find this option on the certificate order page in your hosting CP where you can also take advantage of the 1-click automatic configuration option that we offer you. If the latter is selected in the SSL order wizard, our system will install and set up everything for you through the specially configured server shared IP, so once you acquire and approve the SSL, there will not be anything else to do on your end. You can save the money you'll otherwise have to pay for a dedicated IP address and the SSL will function in the exact same way, so any info which the website visitors submit shall be encoded. The only difference is that if you type the shared IP address instead of your domain in a web browser, the site won't display.

Shared SSL IP in Semi-dedicated Hosting

Any SSL certificate could be used with our specially configured shared IPs, so if you have a semi-dedicated hosting account, you can use this option with just several mouse clicks when you install a certificate that you purchase through us or through some other retailer. For the SSLs that we offer you can also take advantage of another function and have our system set everything up for you. In this way as soon as you approve the SSL, the shared IP will be set for the particular domain or subdomain and the certificate shall be installed with no action required on your end, and thus any data that visitors submit on your site will be secure. The SSL shall function in the exact same way regardless if it's set on a shared or a dedicated IP address and the one thing that's different between the two setups is that entering the shared IP address as a URL within a web browser shall not open your website.
